Why Sweet Freedom

Our Story

Our passion for allergy friendly treats was born when our four children were diagnosed with multiple food allergies and intolerances.  It used to be that many birthday parties were spent in tears as each of them had to miss out on common treats, but now they have sweet bliss.  Our family has been on many food journeys of both successes and failures, we are so happy to now pass on the sweet discoveries of our Gluten Free and Allergy Friendly treats.

We hope you'll find your Sweet Freedom here!

Can I place a special order? How far in advance should I do so?

For standard orders, such as cupcakes, cookies, cake-pops, or cakes, we ask that you place an order 72 hours in advance.  Hand piped sugar & gingerbread cookies, items in excess of three dozen, custom cakes, and some specialty flavors require one week notice.

Bourbon in our baked goods?

No, not really…

We use a pure maple syrup that is aged in bourbon barrels. This process of aging the syrup in bourbon barrel enhances the flavor of the maple syrup. It has a richer, more complex, smoky, butterscotch-like flavor. It is all done without adding any additional ingredients to it, they simply age the syrup in the barrel. The ingredients listed on the bottle, pure maple syrup.

As for our Bourbon Vanilla, the “bourbon” in “Bourbon Vanilla” is not the name of the alcohol used to make it. Bourbon vanilla is the name for all vanilla grown in Madagascar and other islands in the Indian Ocean, including Comoros and Réunion. Réunion was formerly known as the Île Bourbon, and it is the name of that island that gave Bourbon Vanilla its name. Bourbon vanilla beans come from the orchid V. planifolia. Bourbon vanilla beans have a high vanillin content and a very strong, clear and creamy vanilla flavor that is instantly resognizable.

What gluten free flours do you use?

We use a blend of flours including, brown and white rice flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, & cornstarch.  If your are allergic to one of these flours please let us know and we will do our best to create a safe flour blend for you.

Do you use any genetically modified ingredients (GMO)?

None of our ingredients are genetically modified.

Are the baked goods manufactured in a environment without gluten?

Yes!! As our head baker has Celiac Disease and requires a strict and stringent adherence to gluten-free eating, we ensure our products are made without any gluten. Gluten-containing products are never present in the baking process or ever on our equipment.

What if I'm allergic to soy?

We do not bake with any soy protein or have it in the bake shop.  Most of our cupcakes, frostings, cake-pops, and cookies are made with all soy-free ingredients. Please let us know if you need a completely soy-free treat as some of our embellishments also have soy lecithin. Most individuals who are not able to tolerate soy protein are actually able to tolerate soy lecithin without issues.

Are your products corn-free?

Most of our baked goods have baking powder in them, which contains cornstarch. Most of our vanilla cake and sugar cookies have cornstarch in them. If you need a corn-free item, we do not use baking powder in any of our chocolate-based cake recipes.

Are your products nut free?

We do not bake with peanuts or tree-nuts such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, etc. in our bake shop, but we do use coconut milk and coconut products in a number of our treats.  The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology recognizes coconut as a fruit. www.acaai.org  Since the USDA identifies coconut as a tree nut, we are not technically considered a “nut-free facility.” In addition, we use some embellishments from India Tree.   http://www.indiatree.com/FAQ_Page.php?

Please let us know if you specifically need a nut free treat and we will do our best to find safe embellishments for your treat.

We recommend you communicate your allergies and intolerances to us before you order.
Please consume at your own discretion if you are highly allergic.

Sweet Freedom Bake Shop is absolutely amazing! I contacted GinaMarie when I was planning my wedding to make a gluten free wedding cake. She was so sweet, accommodating, and easy to work with. I ordered a few dozen mini cupcakes to try some of her flavors. The chocolate chip & snickerdoodle flavors were out of this world! By far the most delicious and moist gluten free/dairy free cupcakes I have ever had (and I've had a lot).

I ordered a 1/4 sheet cake for my son's fifth birthday and it was a hit! He's allergic to just about everything in a typical cake mix so I was thrilled to find a bakery that was free from top allergens. Everyone gobbled up the cake, it was lemon flavored. No one could tell that it was gluten free or vegan.

I am so happy I found Sweet Freedom Bake Shop! When looking for a vegan wedding cake, most were in Oakland, Berkeley, or SF so finding someone to make a vegan cake in Pleasanton was like a miracle! GinaMarie was wonderful to work with, always quick to respond, and very, very accommodating. She made us the most amazingly elegant and delicious salted caramel vegan wedding cake with edible lace around the edges. Perfect!

The cupcakes we ordered from Sweet Freedom Bake Shop were delicious! They were moist and full of flavor. We ordered 3 dozen cupcakes for my son's birthday party and they turned out perfectly. We had custom fondant toppers made that my son absolutely loved. I also really appreciated GinaMarie's honesty about the options we had within our dietary restrictions. We will definitely order again.
